Sitter Sessions: Why 6–8 Months Is the Sweet Spot for Baby Photos

Between the sleepy newborn stage and the first birthday, there's a magical window most parents don't know about: the sitter stage, around 6–8 months. Your baby can sit up on their own, their personality is blooming — and they can't run away yet.

If you had newborn photos taken and are wondering when to come back, this is the moment.

What Is a Sitter Session?

A sitter session is a milestone photoshoot for babies who can sit unassisted but aren't walking yet — usually between 6 and 8 months old.

At this age, babies are:

  • sitting up confidently on their own

  • full of expressions — big smiles, curious looks, happy squeals

  • interactive and engaged with the camera

  • still content to stay in one place (unlike toddlers!)

It's a short, sweet stage — and it photographs beautifully.

Why 6–8 Months Photographs So Well

The newborn stage is all about sleepy softness. The sitter stage is the opposite: awake, alert, and full of character.

This is when you get the gummy smiles, the chubby arms reaching for toys, the belly laughs, the intense concentration while grabbing tiny toes. These are the expressions you'll want to remember — and they're gone in a matter of weeks as your baby moves on to crawling and standing.

What to Expect at the Session

Sitter sessions take place in my Portland studio and are relaxed and baby-led, like all my sessions.

We'll use simple, neutral styling that keeps the focus on your baby — soft wraps, minimal props, and a calm backdrop. The session moves at your baby's pace, with time for snacks, breaks, and cuddles whenever needed.

Parents and siblings are welcome to join for a few family portraits too — these often become favorites.

When to Book a Sitter Session

The sweet spot for the session itself is 6–8 months, so it's best to reach out when your baby is around 5–6 months old. That way we can plan the session for the right moment — once your baby is sitting confidently.

Every baby develops on their own timeline, so if your little one is a slightly early or late sitter, we'll time it around them.

What Should My Baby Wear?

Simple and comfortable, in soft neutral tones — the same timeless palette as all my sessions. Simple rompers, knits, or just a diaper cover with a soft wrap all photograph beautifully.

Styling guidance is included, so if you're unsure, just ask — I'll help you choose.

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is a sitter session?

A milestone photoshoot for babies who sit unassisted but aren't walking yet, usually at 6–8 months. It captures your baby's emerging personality — smiles, expressions, and all that wonderful chubbiness.

When should I book?

Reach out when your baby is around 5–6 months old, so we can schedule the session for the 6–8 month window once they're sitting confidently.

Can parents and siblings join the session?

Yes — a few family portraits are always a lovely addition to a sitter session, and siblings especially love being included.

How is this different from a smash cake session?

A sitter session is a simple, clean milestone portrait session. A smash cake session is the messy first-birthday celebration that comes later, around 12 months. Many families do both.

A Milestone Worth Capturing

The sitter stage is brief — a few short months between the tiny newborn days and the wild toddler ones. It's the age of pure, joyful baby-ness, and it deserves its own portraits.
