What to Wear for Newborn Photos: A Simple Studio Guide for Parents
One of the biggest worries parents have before a newborn photoshoot is what to wear — especially during the early days after birth, when energy is low and planning feels overwhelming.
The good news is that for a studio newborn session, you don’t need to prepare much at all. Everything is designed to feel simple, cohesive, and calm — with styling support provided every step of the way.
You Don’t Need to Bring Anything for Your Baby
For studio newborn sessions, all styling for your baby is provided.
I have a curated collection of:
knitted onesies
soft pants and shorts
cozy sweaters
simple blankets and wraps
These pieces are chosen specifically to photograph beautifully in a studio setting and to keep your baby comfortable throughout the session. Parents are often relieved to know that they don’t need to shop or plan outfits for their newborn in advance.
Client Wardrobe for Moms
Most moms choose to use the client wardrobe, and it’s always available for studio sessions.
The wardrobe is designed with postpartum comfort in mind and includes soft, flattering pieces that work beautifully on camera. Using the client wardrobe helps create a cohesive look and takes the pressure off choosing outfits during an already busy season.
You’re also welcome to bring something of your own if you prefer — but many moms find the client wardrobe to be the easiest and most stress-free option.
A Neutral, Earth-Tone Color Palette
Studio newborn photos are styled using a soft, neutral, earth-tone palette.
These tones photograph beautifully together and allow skin tones and connection to stand out.
Colors that work especially well include:
cream
beige
warm white
soft browns
muted neutrals
Even when different neutral tones are mixed together, the result feels cohesive and timeless.
A Note About Blue Tones
I generally don’t recommend solid light blue clothing for studio newborn sessions.
Blue tones can make images feel cooler overall, and during editing they can be tricky — sometimes shifting warmer in a way that doesn’t photograph as beautifully.
That said:
light blue denim works well, especially for dads
dark denim can feel heavy on camera and is usually best avoided
Neutral or lighter denim tends to photograph softer and more balanced in studio light.
What Dads Should Wear
For dads, simple and neutral works best.
I recommend:
light or medium-wash denim
neutral pants in beige, gray, or soft brown
simple tops without logos or graphics
Keeping dad’s outfit light and simple helps balance the overall look and keeps the focus on connection rather than clothing.
Comfort Always Comes First
Especially for new parents, comfort matters more than anything else.
Clothing should:
feel comfortable to sit and move in
not require constant adjusting
allow you to relax and focus on your baby
When parents feel comfortable, it shows — and it always results in more natural, connected images.
A Fully Styled, Stress-Free Experience
One of the benefits of a studio newborn session is knowing that styling is already taken care of.
With baby outfits provided, a client wardrobe for moms, and clear guidance for dads, the experience stays calm and simple — exactly as it should be during the newborn stage.
