A Sunny Maternity Session at Cannon Beach

Why timing matters — and why it's always worth it

Cannon Beach is one of those locations that never really needs an introduction. Wide open space, soft sand, dramatic rocks, ocean air — it's effortlessly beautiful. And yes… it's also a little tricky when it comes to light.

This maternity session took place in July, on a very sunny day — which meant we started later than most people expect. But trust me, timing is everything here.

Why Timing Matters at Cannon Beach

The start time for a Cannon Beach maternity session depends a lot on the season and how sunny the day is. In the summer months, the sun stays high for a long time, and starting too early usually means harsh light, strong shadows, and a lot of squinting (not ideal for calm, timeless photos).

For reference:

  • May: around 7:30–8:00 pm

  • July: sessions typically start around 8:30 pm

  • September: closer to 7:00–7:30 pm

On overcast days (which Oregon is famous for 😉), we're much more flexible — clouds act like a giant softbox, and we're not tied as tightly to the clock. I always keep a close eye on the forecast and guide you on the best start time so you don't have to stress about it.

One Less Thing to Think About: Shoes

One of my favorite things about Cannon Beach sessions? No shoes required. Barefoot just makes sense here. It looks natural, feels relaxed, and honestly — it's one less decision to make. Sand, water, flowing dresses… it all works together beautifully.

Yes, It Takes Planning — and Yes, It's Worth It

Cannon Beach does require a bit more coordination than a city location:

  • later start times in summer

  • wind (hello, Oregon coast)

  • cooler temperatures, even on sunny days

But the result? Soft light. Open space. A calm, powerful backdrop that lets the focus stay where it belongs — on you, your connection, and this season of waiting.

It's one of my absolute favorite locations for maternity photography near Portland, especially for families who love natural beauty and a more relaxed, meaningful experience.
