Can You Take Newborn Photos at One Month Old?

The short answer is yes - absolutely.

In fact, some of my favorite newborn portraits have been taken when babies were 4–6 weeks old.

Many parents start looking for a newborn photographer after their baby arrives and quickly wonder if they've missed the ideal window. The first few weeks can be a blur of feeding, recovery, sleepless nights, and simply adjusting to life with a new baby. Photography often ends up lower on the priority list.

The good news is that beautiful newborn photos are still very possible at one month old.

What Changes Around One Month?

By four to six weeks, babies are usually a little more awake and aware of the world around them.

You may notice:

  • more eye contact

  • more facial expressions

  • longer awake periods

  • more stretching and movement

  • more interaction with parents

These sessions often feel slightly different from traditional sleepy newborn sessions, but they can be just as beautiful and meaningful.

Do One-Month-Old Babies Still Sleep During a Session?

Usually, yes.

From my experience, babies around this age almost always wake up when they arrive at the studio. There is simply too much to look at.

Because of that, I often begin with awake portraits, family photos, and parent connection images. Then we follow baby's lead, take breaks as needed, and wait for sleep to come naturally.

Many babies still fall asleep during the session, and when they do, we can create a wonderful variety of images.

What About Curled-Up Newborn Poses?

This is one of the biggest differences.

Most babies around one month old are naturally stretching out of that curled newborn position. Because of that, I typically don't focus on heavily posed wrapped or womb-like curled poses at this age.

That said, every baby is different.

Occasionally I have babies who sleep very deeply and still settle beautifully into some classic newborn poses. It just becomes less predictable than it is during the first two weeks.

My approach is always baby-led, so I work with what feels natural and comfortable for your baby.

What Photos Are Still Possible at One Month?

Quite a lot, actually.

At this age we can still create:

  • beautiful parent and baby portraits

  • family photos

  • sibling photos

  • detail images of tiny fingers and toes

  • natural baby portraits

  • awake portraits with eye contact

  • wrapped images when baby is comfortable

  • connection-focused photographs

In many cases, the overall session looks very similar to a traditional newborn session.

What I Personally Love About This Age

One of my favorite things about photographing babies around one month old is their growing personality.

The eye contact can be incredible.

Sometimes babies look directly into the camera, giving us expressive portraits that simply aren't possible during the first few sleepy days after birth.

I also love the connection between parents and baby at this stage. Families are beginning to settle into their new rhythm, and those interactions often create some of the most meaningful images from the session.

Is One Month Too Late for Newborn Photos?

Not at all.

While the first two weeks are often considered the traditional newborn window, beautiful newborn photographs can absolutely be created beyond that stage.

What matters most isn't hitting a perfect age.

It's preserving this season before it passes.

Because whether your baby is ten days old or six weeks old, they will never be this little again.
